Control your portions: How a tennis ball can help!

Portion Sizes

Over the past 20 years, our portion sizes have skyrocketed. This fact is directly linked to the rise of obesity and weight gain in our country. Being overweight can increase your risk for several diseases, such as heart disease, stroke and sleep apnea. One GREAT step we can take in weight management is watching our portion sizes – and that goes for vegetables and starches.

So how do you know how much broccoli, rice,or pasta is a healthy portion? Check out these tricks to help with your visualsize comparison:

Raw fruit: ½ cup = a billiard ball

Dried fruit: ¼ cup = an egg

Starch or grain (pasta, rice, etc.): ½ cup = a tennis ball

Cooked vegetables: ½ cup = a billiard ball

Now that you know these size comparisons, what can you do? Keep these tricks in mind when you are serving yourself and when you are being served!
