Over the past 20 years, our portion sizes have skyrocketed. This fact is directly linked to the rise of obesity and weight gain in our country. Being overweight can increase your risk for several diseases, such as heart disease, stroke and sleep apnea. One GREAT step we can take in weight management is watching our portion sizes – and that goes for vegetables and starches.
So how do you know how much broccoli, rice,or pasta is a healthy portion? Check out these tricks to help with your visualsize comparison:
Raw fruit: ½ cup = a billiard ball
Dried fruit: ¼ cup = an egg
Starch or grain (pasta, rice, etc.): ½ cup = a tennis ball
Cooked vegetables: ½ cup = a billiard ball
