National Radiologic Technology Week®
Sunday, November 7-Saturday, November 13, 2010

National Radiologic Technology Week® is celebrated annually to recognize the vital work of radiologic technologists (RTs) across the nation. The celebration takes place each November to commemorate the anniversary of the X-ray's discovery by Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen on November 8, 1895.

The weeklong celebration calls attention to the valuable work of RTs in the health care field and the highly technical images that they make. The images play an integral role in the medical process and in the lives of millions of patients. Thank you to our Emory Healthcare RTs for your commitment to patient care!

Factoring in fitness at EUOSH!bike rack

When Delena Chappell-James, EUOSH, Operating Room, attended one of John Fox's CEO forums this past spring, she had a question: "Can we have a bike rack for those employees who want to ride to work sometimes?" The answer to that question came in the form of a new, well-lit bike rack conveniently located in the EUOSH parking lot. The rack is also within one of the frames of the security cameras for added safety.

As great as the rack is, it isn't the only fitness feature that has recently come to EUOSH. Chappell-James and her co-workers also wanted a way to grab a quick walk during lunch without venturing off campus. They felt safer closer to the building, if heading out alone. The end result? A 1.5-mile, marked trail around EUOSH.

"Fitness is my thing," said Chappell-James. "We spend most of our hours here. Now, we have the tools to still maintain our fitness. I think that the process to get the bike rack and trail was fabulous. I've never had a CEO or administration in any of the places I've been be so open to listening and then have those suggestions come to fruition. It is awesome. I feel comfortable expressing these ideas and questions. Members of leadership, such as June Connor, heard what we wanted to be healthy, and made it happen. This is a positive for us and for our patients."

A special thanks also goes out to Bruce Larson, EUOSH, Facilities Management, and his team for managing the implementation of the bike rack and trail.

Congrats to our Emory Healthcare Medical Technology graduates!

The Emory Healthcare Medical Technology Program (EHMTP) - the only accredited medical technology program in the Atlanta area - graduated its second class of laboratory science students on July 23, 2010! The yearlong program was first launched in September 2008 to address the community's need for more medical laboratory scientists.

The EHMTP is a full-time, hospital-based program for applicants holding a bachelor's degree (preferably in science) and an interest in laboratory science. The program administrators include our very own Dr. John D. Roback, medical director, and Stacy Steward, program director. Students are awarded a certificate in medical technology after the completion of the program. They then go on to take a nationally recognized certification exam for medical laboratory scientists.

For more information about the program, visit www.emoryhealthcare.org/medtech or call the program office at 404-686-2654.

Interns at The Emory Clinic spearhead a book drive

When four TEC interns working out of Decatur Plaza saw a need for reading material for our patients, families and visitors, they took matters into their own hands! Sheriff Muse-Ariyoh, Hasan Zaidi, Daniel Lofgren and Vinod Vishwanath (pictured below, left to right) organized a book drive in July. Overall, they collected more than 200 books and magazines! The donations went directly to the Emory Hospitals bookmobile, which helps distribute books and magazines to waiting rooms and hospital patients and visitors. Congrats on a successful community-focused endeavor and thanks to everyone who donated!

Would you also like to donate gently used magazines and paperback books to our patients?

You can drop off your donation at the Guest Services desks at EUH, EUHM or WWGH. Some of the more popular magazines include People, Time, Southern Living, Reader's Digest, and various fashion and spiritual magazines.
