At Decatur Plaza, TEC Patient Financial Services' December Spirit Week combined holiday fun and giving!

The team members at Decatur Plaza took part in a weeklong December Spirit Week that focused on team building and internal/external giving. For example, they participated in a holiday wear contest and a special team huddle activity that included working through a survival scenario as a team. They also raised funds for the Virtual Can Food Drive and held a department challenge to promote participation in the MyEmory Healthcare employee giving program.

In fact, $1,000 was raised for the Virtual Can Food Drive. The MyEmory Healthcare competition resulted in $6,500 annual committed donations. Kudos to Decatur Plaza for your team spirit!

Pictured below is Barbara Digulla, TEC Patient Financial Services. Digulla came in first place for the holiday wear contest!

Doctor-for-a-Day!

This fall, 14 community leaders said, "Yes," to being a part of Emory Healthcare's first Doctor-for-a-Day program. In this daylong experience, participants shadowed physicians during a behind-the-scenes view inside Atlanta's only academic health care system. This unique program gives community leaders a better understanding of the clinical expertise that makes Emory Healthcare one of the top providers in the country. Participants also see the challenges a nonprofit health care system faces.

Participants made a commitment to not just spend eight hours in the hospital, but also to meet health requirements, such as seasonal influenza vaccination; TB screening; and measles, mumps and rubella clearance. Clad in white coats and sporting an ID badge, the guests learned about the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), signed confidentiality forms and spent time in several units. And, of course, no academic experience would be complete without a presentation of diplomas to cap off the day!

Several teams came together to make Doctor-for-a-Day possible. A special thank you goes out to the EUH staff and physicians in the following areas: 2D-ICU, Bed Management, Cardiology, Compliance, Emergency Department, Employee Health, Facilities Management, Food and Nutrition Services, Infection Control, Neurointerventional Radiology, OR, Public Safety, Serious Communicable Diseases Unit and Transplant Center.

Doctor-for-a-Day returns in 2011 with a program at EUH in January and March, and at EUHM in February with two programs.

A flood of teamwork

Emory University Hospital Midtown (EUHM) employees demonstrate great teamwork every day, and their dedication to our patients and each other was exemplified when a flood impacted patient care one morning this fall on Unit 71 ICU.

While at a meeting, Bed Management leadership at EUHM received a call from Sheldon Sloan, Nursing Administration, EUHM, regarding a flood on Unit 71 ICU. The meeting was delayed and Bed Management leadership dispatched to Unit 71 ICU to assess the situation and the needs of the unit. Nursing leadership, Environmental Services and Safety were contacted immediately, and Bed Management staff worked to safely transfer staff affected by the flood to other units at EUHM in a timely manner.

In a matter of minutes, four critical patients were transferred to different rooms, while other ICU areas joined forces to expedite transfers of patients from their units to other units to receive patients from 71 ICU. Unit 71 ICU, Bed Management and other units at EUHM truly came together and demonstrated what teamwork means at Emory Healthcare.

A special thanks goes to Sheldon Sloan; Sandra Shamburger, Kathleen Benford, Haronepthia Cameron, Lavoria Patterson, Mary Michaels, Remitrice Reynolds and Myrtis Smith, all Bed Management, EUHM; and units 71 ICU, 31 ICU, 41 CCU and 21.
