Patient Resources
Glossary of Terms

Cervix: Cancer of the cervix is screened by performing a Pap Smear. Cells from your cervix are collected and tested for cervial cancer and detect the presence of High Risk HPV (Human Papilloma Virus).

Colon: A Flexible Sigmoidoscopy is performed to screen for Colon Cancer. With flexible sigmoidoscopy, the physician can see bleeding, inflammation, abnormal growths, and ulcers in the descending colon and rectum. This procedure takes about 20 to 30 minutes. During the procedure, you might feel pressure and slight cramping in your lower abdomen. The colon and rectum must be completely empty for flexible sigmoidoscopy to be thorough and safe, so you may be asked to drink only clear liquids for 12 to 24 hours beforehand. A liquid diet means fat-free bouillon or broth, gelatin, strained fruit juice, water, plain coffee, plain tea, or diet soda. You may be asked to take an enema before the procedure.

Colposcopy: This procedure is used to evaluate an abnormal Pap Smear test. Using a microscope, your physician will look closely at your cervix. If needed, biopsies (tissue samples) of the cervix may be taken during the procedure.

Cryotherapy of the Cervix: This procedure is used to freeze and kill any abnormal cells that may be seen during a colposcopy.

Echocardiogram: This is an ultrasound of your heart to assess the pumping function of your heart. It is also used to evaluate any heart murmurs (abnormal heart sounds) heard by your physician on a clinical exam.

Electrocardiogram (EKG): This is a test to check the electrical activity of your heart. This is a simple test which takes only 2-5 minutes. Your physician may choose to perform this test for a variety of reasons, including chest pain and shortness of breath.

Endometrial Biopsy: This is a procedure where your physician will use a small tube to collect cells from your uterus for analysis. This procedure is done to check for Uterine Cancer.

Exercise Stress Test: Also known as a Treadmill Test. This test is used to check the condition of your heart while you are exercising. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes for this test.

Flexible Sigmoidoscopy: This is one of the procedures performed to screen patients for Colon Cancer. Nasolaryngoscopy: This procedure is done using a thin tube with a light at the end. The tube is inserted into the patient's nose and used to look in the nose, back of the throat, and vocal chords. People with chronic cough or hoarseness can benefit from this procedure.

Pap Smear: This is a test where cells from your cervix are collected and tested for cervical cancer and detect the presence of High Risk HPV (Human Papilloma Virus).

Vasectomy: This office procedure provides contraception (birth control) for men who no longer wish to have children.
