Inpatient Geriatric Rehabilitation Services

Rehabilitation services are designed to help elderly patients regain stamina, strength and physical independence. Seniors who have been injured in an accident or fall, have undergone a procedure such as a hip replacement, experienced a stroke or who display a decline in physical function are ideal candidates for the rehabilitation program. Wesley Woods geriatricians, rehabilitation specialists, occupational therapists and speech therapists are experienced in helping elderly patients regain independence.

Geriatric inpatient rehabilitation services offered include:

Horticultural Therapy, Music Therapy and Therapeutic Recreation

The purpose of these recreation and rehabilitation therapies is two-fold. Elderly patients become re-motivated and participate in interesting activities such as gardening, listening to music and other physical activities while developing mental and physical adaptive skills to continue to participate in their interests and activities.

Occupational Therapy

Older persons may experience difficulty carrying out every day activities, due to illness, injury or changes associated with aging. In occupational therapy (O.T.) at Wesley Woods, we assess an individual's ability to handle the demands of his/her living environment. This may include bathing, dressing, toileting, eating, taking medications safely and other self care tasks. The ability to shop for and prepare a meal, use the phone, handle daily finances and respond appropriately in an emergency are among other areas that may be considered.

At Wesley Woods occupational therapists work with both inpatients and outpatients. In addition, persons with a wide range of diagnoses may be able to benefit from O.T. services. This may include: persons with low vision, arthritis, neuropathies, contractures; persons who have had a stroke, have Parkinson's or other neurological disorders; persons with memory, judgment and other cognitive issues; or persons who are deconditioned following heart or respiratory complications, or infection.
