Long-Term Acute Care

The Long-Term Acute Care Unit at the Geriatric Hospital is the only university-based geriatric program of its kind in the state of Georgia. The Long-Term Acute Care Unit is for elderly patients with complex medical cases or a need for ventilator management. 

The Long-Term Acute Care Unit is staffed and managed by Emory University School of Medicine staff and an experienced team of geriatric health care specialists. The patients of the Long-Term Acute Care Unit typically have suffered from a stroke, undergone a major surgical procedure, or suffer for serious wounds and/or infections. Many patients in Long Term Acute Care also are dependent on oxygen or ventilator support.

  • Managing chronic pulmonary conditions
  • Ventilator support and weaning
  • Complex wound management
  • IV antibiotic therapy
  • Peritoneal and hemodialysis
  • Parenteral hyperalimentation
  • Postoperative complications
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation
  • Fiberoptic bronchoscopy
  • Blood product transfusion
  • Multidisciplinary patient support
