Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) Patient Referrals
Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is one of the most effective treatments for depression, particularly when treatment with medication has failed or a patient needs a rapid symptom improvement.
ECT works by electrically stimulating the brain and improving the release of neurochemicals that aid in the treatment of depression. This treatment is administered under anesthesia and has become an increasingly safe depression treatment option since it was first introduced in the early 1930s.
The ECT Treatment Unit is located in the Wesley Woods Geriatric Hospital* and provides services to both inpatients and outpatients.
