Can I take Herbal Supplements with a diagnosis of heart failure?

Please discuss with your physician before taking any over-the-counter vitamins or herbal supplements.  Although individuals with a chronic illness often take herbal supplements (also called “naturoceuticals” or “nutraceuticals”),  caution should be taken to avoid potential medication interactions.  Patients with heart failure metabolize (process) medications differently due to alterations in blood flow (circulation), and are predisposed to toxic drug interactions between cardiac medications and some herbs or supplements.

For more information on herbs, see the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine-National Institutes of Health website.
