Dr. Wang is originally from Lexington, Kentucky where he graduated from the University of Kentucky with a BA in Chemistry in 1992. Dr. Wang attended and graduated from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta where he received his M.D. in 1996. He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas in 1999. Dr. Wang moved back to Atlanta in October 1999 to help start the Emory Hospital Medicine Program. Dr. Wang was one of the initial five physicians and has personally helped start hospital medicine programs at four locations: Parkway Medical Center, Emory Dunwoody Medical Center, Northlake Regional Medical Center and Emory Johns Creek Hospital. Dr. Wang during his years of service from 1999-2008 has served as a Site Medical Director for Hospital Medicine at various locations.
In April 2007, Dr. Wang was named the Chief Medical Officer at Emory Johns Creek Hospital where he continues to serve in this role. In his CMO role, Emory Johns Creek Hospital received the highest initial Joint Commission survey of any HCA hospital in history with no major findings/recommendations. Also under his leadership, Emory Johns Creek Hospital ranked number one out of 169 HCA hospitals during second quarter 2007 for overall patient satisfaction. In addition, Dr. Wang assisted in the designation of Johns Creek, GA in 2008 in becoming the first "Heart Ready" city in the state of Georgia. In his CMO role he has also oversees physician recruitment for Emory Johns Creek Hospital. Dr. Wang also has served on Georgia Hospital Association's Task Force for Quality Improvement for Targeted Care Measures. Dr. Wang is a member of the Emory Johns Creek Hospital Board of Trustees.
After a thorough national search, Dr. Wang was named the Director of the Section of Hospital Medicine in October 2008. In this role, he oversaw the Emory Section of Hospital Medicine at eight facilities (Emory University Hospital, Emory University Hospital Midtown, Emory Johns Creek Hospital, Emory Eastside Medical Center, Wesley Woods, Emory Orthopedics & Spine Hospital, Cartersville Medical Center and West Georgia Hospital), Palliative Care at Emory University Hospital and Emory University Hospital Midtown, a Clinical Research/Quality Improvement Program, a Faculty Development Program and the Section's involvement in the medical education of residents at the various locations. In September 2011, Emory Hospital Medicine was advanced to become the tenth Division in the Department of Medicine. Currently, the Division of Hospital of Medicine has over 115 faculty members serving nine hospitals in Georgia (Emory University Hospital, Emory University Hospital Midtown, Emory Johns Creek Hospital, Wesley Woods, Wesley Woods LTACH, Emory Orthopedics & Spine Hospital, Saint Joseph’s Hospital, Atlanta VA Medical Center and West Georgia Health System) making it the largest academic hospital medicine program in the country and the largest hospital medicine system in the state of Georgia.
Dr. Wang has won a number of awards during his career including: 2004 Outstanding Teaching Award from the Emory Family Medicine Residency Program, 2006 Emory Hospital Medicine Community Service Award and the 2008 Emory Hospital Medicine Mark V. Williams Award for Overall Excellence in Hospital Medicine. He was a member of the National Association of Inpatient Physician's (now Society of Hospital Medicine) Benchmark and Value Task Force from 2001 to 2003. He serves on Society of Hospital Medicine’s Leadership Committee. He has been a Co-Director for the regional annual Southern Hospital Medicine Conference since 2009. He also is on the editorial board of Today's Hospitalist. Dr. Wang is also credited along with others in establishing an indigent clinic for immigrants in Chamblee, GA. He is a Melvin Jones Fellow from Lions International largely due to his volunteer work in helping establish this indigent clinic. Dr. Wang's work interests include leadership development, improving communication between hospitalists and primary care physicians, systems improvement, quality improvement, standardization of protocols, community hospital medicine, and access to healthcare.
