CLINICAL PATHOLOGY DIVISION

The Division of Clinical Pathology is comprised of more than 25 faculty members who actively participate in the clinical, research and educational missions of Emory Healthcare. Faculty members oversee a broad range of clinical testing sections that include:

Core Labs

The EML Core Labs serve each of the individual hospital locations within the Emory System. They perform a broad range of clinical tests to include routine hematology, chemistry, coagulation, urinalysis and body fluids. The core labs use the latest advance technology to provide clinicians with accurate test results in a timely manner. Routine tests performed around the clock are:

  • Complete Blood Count
  • Peripheral Blood Differential
  • Chemistry panels
  • Coagulation tests (PT, aPTT, Fibrinogen, D-Dimer)
  • Urinalysis
  • Body Fluid tests
The Center for Transfusion and Cellular Therapies

(CTCT) is a national leader in providing state-of-the-art therapeutic apheresis procedures. In particular, we are a regional referral center for:

  • Photopheresis used in the treatment of post- transplant graft-versus-host disease (GVHD
  • LDL apheresis procedures prescribed for patients with forms of hereditary hypercholesterolemia that are refractory to medical management
Immunology

The Immunology Lab offers testing and result interpretation to help diagnose, monitor and treat infectious diseases and autoimmune diseases. We utilize a range of advanced testing methodologies, including:

  • Protein electrophoresis and immunofixation
  • Colorimetric, turbidimetric, EIA and chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassays
  • Fluorenzyme immunoassay
Microbiology

Our full-service Microbiology Lab covers a wide range of disciplines, including:

  • Bacteriology - testing for aerobic and anaerobic infections, bacteremia, meningitis, pneumonia, food poisoning, Legionnaires' disease and other bacterial infections
  • Parasitology - testing for malaria and other blood parasites, intestinal parasites, pneumocystis pneumonia, microsporidiosis and free-living amoeba infections of the eye
  • Mycobacteriology - testing for tuberculosis and other mycobacterial diseases
  • Mycology - testing for infections with fungi and yeast from all types of specimens
  • Virology - testing for herpes simplex infections, respiratory virus infections and other viral infections
Flow Cytometry/Bone Marrow Lab

The Flow Cytometry Lab offers testing and result interpretation to help diagnose, monitor and treat hematopoietic diseases and disorders, including leukemia and lymphoma. Available tests include:

  • Leukemia/lymphoma profiles
  • Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH)profiles
  • CD4 testing
  • Enumeration of CD34+ hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells
  • Immune deficiency profiles
  • Bone marrow differentials
Molecular Diagnostics

The Molecular Diagnostics Lab offers testing and result interpretation to aid in the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of infectious bacterial and viral diseases. Additionally, tests are performed for several distinct leukemias, lymphomas, sarcomas, and several other cancers. Thrombotic risk factors are also assessed. We utilize a range of advanced testing methodologies for the amplification and detection of RNA and DNA, including:

  • Reverse transcription (RT-PCR)
  • Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
  • Real time qualitative/quantitative PCR (qPCR and qRT-PCR)
  • Invader DNA technology assays
  • Hybridization and electrochemical detection assays
  • Fragment analysis
  • Gene sequencing (Next generation, Sanger and Pyro)
  • Cancer Mutation Panels
Special Chemistry

The Special Chemistry Lab performs unique tests to include immunosuppressant drug monitoring (Rapamycin, Cyclosporine, Tacrolimus and Mycophenolic Acid), Busulfan, Nicotine/Cotinine and HbA1C testing. We utilize a range of advanced testing methodologies, including:

  • High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)
  • Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS)
