Emory Healthcare's Magnet journey

EHC has embarked on the journey for Magnet designation - the American Nurses Credentialing Center's highest international recognition of nursing excellence. The system is striving for Magnet designation as an outward symbol of the drive to set the standard in quality care.

Applying for system-wide Magnet designation is a bold venture; most health care organizations apply one hospital at a time. However, Emory Healthcare felt it necessary to apply as a system since all of its hospitals and clinics share the same vision and goal - to transform patient care.

Although Magnet is a nursing designation, Magnet isn't just about nurses. Individuals don't receive Magnet designation - nurses with high-functioning interdisciplinary teams in hospitals and clinics do. For EHC to attain this prestigious designation, nurses, physicians, allied health professionals and non-clinical professionals alike need to form a cohesive team with the same end goal of providing outstanding patient care.

EHC's 2010 Magnet campaign, Magnet Means Me, challenges the system to discover the Magnet characteristics and work behaviors that lie within all employees. All employees embody the Magnet spirit and need to come together to make our Magnet journey a success.

Future issues of Medical Staff Update will outline and describe the five key components of Magnet and how providers can embody them in what they do every day. The articles will also inform, educate and update providers on our Magnet journey.
