When Atlanta resident Rebecca Single heard the astonishing news that she had
breast cancer, she was in total denial. The attractive 34-year-old thought breast
cancer only happened to women over 40. ?I was young, I worked out and I
ate the right things. How could this be true??
After finally accepting the diagnosis, Rebecca?s practicality and positive
spirit kicked in. ?I decided to go wherever I needed to go to get the
best help possible,? said Rebecca. She soon found she didn?t need
to pack her bags. The help she needed was right in her own backyard---at Emory.
Rebecca called her cousin Phil, who works for the National Institute of Health
in Bethesda, Maryland and asked him for help. Phil got her in touch with the
head of Breast Cancer research for the NIH who told Rebecca that one of the
nation?s leading experts was right there in Atlanta--- Dr. William Wood,
at The Emory Clinic.
?Dr. Wood has been wonderful,? says Rebecca, who has just completed
her final chemotherapy treatment. He is involved with the very latest research
and treatment innovations. And, he has been incredibly supportive to me personally.?
Rebecca feels fortunate that she lives in an age and in a place where breast
cancer treatment is so successful. ?My aunt, Phil?s mom, died of
breast cancer when she was about at my age,? says Rebecca. ?I feel
so lucky that I have so many options that she didn?t have.?
