Spero G. Karas Spero G. Karas, MD, is director of the orthopaedic sports medicine fellowship program. Dr. Karas started practicing at Emory in 2005.

What Makes Dr. Karas a Standout

Dr. Karas specializes in providing comprehensive care to people of all ages with shoulder, knee, and upper extremity conditions related to traumatic, degenerative, sports, and work-related injuries. In addition to this role, he serves as a consulting team physician for Georgia Tech University, Emory University Athletics, and Mount Vernon Presbyterian High School. He is the author of more than 150 publications, presentations, and demonstrational videos. He has trained over 50 residents, fellows, and graduate students in subspecialty care of the shoulder, knee and sports medicine.His research has been published in many journals, including The American Journal of Sports Medicine. Dr. Karas is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has held leadership positions in numerous societies, including the American Orthopaedic Association.

Personal

A former wrestler at the University of Notre Dame, Dr. Karas continues to participate in sports such as golf, skiing, snowboarding, and fitness training. He also enjoys computers and digital photography. He and his wife, Johanna, are blessed with three beautiful children: Gus, Elena, and Nicholas.
