Behavioral Exposure Therapy for Veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
|
Summary
The purpose of this study is to determine which of 3 groups of Operation Iraqi Freedom Veterans will respond best to behavior therapy treatment for PTSD. Veterans will be randomly assigned to one of the 3 groups. All 3 groups will receive virtual reality exposure therapy. One group will receive D-Cycloserine prior to the virtual reality sessions, one group will receive Alprazolam (Xanax) prior to virtual reality sessions, and one group will receive placebo prior to virtual reality sessions. Participants will have measurement of symptoms and response to treatment including interviews, filling out self-report scales, and measurements of physical reactivity (such as heart rate and blood pressure). We expect that all veterans will benefit from the virtual reality exposure treatment, and we hypothesize that those veterans receiving D-Cycloserine prior to this exposure therapy will show the greatest and longest-lasting improvement in PTSD symptoms.
