About Dr. Ly

Dr. Ly (pronounced Lee) is a board certified primary care physician at the Emory Clinic Old 4th Ward in Atlanta. He enjoys treating a wide variety of patients, from young professionals who are due for wellness checkups to older patients who need assistance managing chronic disease. Dr. Ly has a special interest in maternity and newborn care. He is also an advocate for men's health, encouraging all men to seek healthcare more often.

Dr. Ly completed medical school at the Loyala University of Chicago Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood, Illinois. He completed his residency in family medicine at West Suburban Medical Center (Oak Park, IL) and a fellowship at PCC Wellness Center (Oak Park, IL).

When he finished his medical training, Dr. Ly spent six months providing primary care services in rural Peru. He worked in a hospital located along a river in the middle of the Amazon jungle where boats were the primary mode of transport and access to care was limited. He provided a range of services, including preventive care and general surgery. Dr. Ly was struck by the people's incredible resiliency and commitment to community. He plans to return every year with medical students and residents.

A Primary Care Doctor's Role As Translator

Dr. Ly is fluent in Spanish but that's not exactly what he means when he talks about his role as a "translator". As a primary care doctor, he is the first to see what is happening with his patients' health. Therefore, he makes it a priority to connect with them on a more personal level in an effort to understand each as a whole person. Every one of their health concerns has some value and impact on their lives, so Dr. Ly feels as if it is his responsibility to listen and then decipher what he hears. By explaining their current situations in an easily understandable way, he can help his patients take ownership of their health and develop improvement plans to fit their lifestyles.

For maximum effectiveness, Dr. Ly urges his patients to establish routine office visits and stay in touch using Emory's patient portal. This allows him to monitor progress, get the skinny on major life events, and suggest next steps as each small win is achieved.

A Simple Approach

Dr. Ly has a simple healthcare approach: Focus on the things we know are healthy and the rest will follow. Many times patients feel overwhelmed by their health issues. It is easy to fixate on the negatives rather than caring for oneself in a holistic way. Dr. Ly firmly believes outcomes are augmented when his patients shift focus and concentrate on finding small ways to live healthier every day.

Dr. Ly challenges his patients to be open minded and to experiment: Get up and stretch every hour at work. Convert favorite restaurant meals into healthier versions at home. Go dancing with friends. Healthy habits can become addictive (in a good way) as they lead to increased energy levels, greater mental health and clarity, better sleep and so much more.

Even healthy people can look for ways to take better care of themselves. Dr. Ly suggests they visit his primary care practice for preventive care. He can help them monitor the physical changes that naturally occur  with age and identify/treat small issues before they become unruly.

More About Dr. Ly

Dr. Ly makes it a point to practice what he preaches. He is always working to enhance his physical, mental and emotional health. He is an avid hiker and rock climber. He likes to dabble in the kitchen cooking food from all over the world. And, he travels internationally when he has the chance.

Dr. Ly also participates in street outreach for homeless youth. He provides the basic resources and education these young adults (aged 16 to 24) need to improve their lives. One week he might distribute suits so they look professional at job interviews. The next, he may help them apply for official identification cards. He does whatever he can to share his blessings and give them hope for the future.
