About Dr. Mulvihill

Shane Mulvihill, OD, MS, is an optometrist focusing on pediatric eye care and general optometry. He joined the Emory Eye Center faculty in August 2017.

Dr. Mulvihill received his undergraduate education at Xavier University and studied optometry at The Ohio State University College of Optometry. He graduated in 2016 with his Doctor of Optometry (cum laude) and his Master of Vision Science.

Prior to completing optometry school, Dr. Mulvihill gained experience by working as an optometric assistant and a vision therapist. He also served as the resident optometrist in binocular vision and pediatrics at the OSU College of Optometry. In that role he provided patient care, facilitated mobile vision screenings for school-age children, and instructed third and fourth year optometry students and interns.

Dr. Mulvihill has previously worked on research studies that examined factors leading to the development of myopia (nearsightedness) in children. He examined the benefit of time outdoors by measuring light exposure and the activity of intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells in study participants. He has also worked as a clinical investigator and examiner for the Convergence Insufficiency Treatment Trial- Attention and Reading Trial which was designed to quantify the academic benefit in children who have undergone treatment for convergence insufficiency. Dr. Mulvihill’s future research interests include refractive error development, vision-related learning outcomes, and other pediatric eye research projects.

“I was first drawn to pediatric optometry because of the ability to change a child’s life for the better,” Dr. Mulvihill says. “I think about giving a child her first pair of glasses or helping him become a better reader, and I wonder how much more that child will be capable of achieving because he or she came to see me. I love seeing kids because they keep my days fun-filled and exciting.”

Dr. Mulvihill is a member of the Gold Key International Optometric Honor Society and the Beta Sigma Kappa International Optometric Honor Society.
