Reconstructive Surgery

A significant part of the Emory Aesthetic Surgery Center’s practice is dedicated to reconstructive surgery, with the goal of restoring patients to a more normal appearance following surgery for cancer, after an accident, or to correct a birth defect.

Our surgeons are recognized internationally, and they give generously of their time and expertise to help others on a pro-bono basis. Dr. Jack Culbertson spends three weeks each year performing reconstructive surgery on a Navajo Indian reservation.

The following are brief descriptions of the reconstructive procedures we offer:

Procedures

Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is designed to restore breasts to a normal state following a mastectomy. Although the procedure can be performed many years following breast cancer surgery, recent advancements encourage patients to undergo breast reconstruction at the time of the mastectomy. Reconstructive surgery can be done using either breast implants or by transferring a patient’s own tissue, most commonly from the lower abdomen or back.

Skin Cancer (MOHS)

Skin reconstruction is designed to repair facial defects that occur as a result of tumor removal. For some patients with skin cancer, MOHS surgery is performed to ensure complete removal of the facial cancer. The plastic surgeon uses special techniques to minimize scarring and restore a natural-looking appearance.

Facial Scars

Reconstructive procedures can correct scars and deformities caused by trauma (such as automobile accidents). While no scar can be removed completely, procedures are used to modify scars and restore bones to their normal positions. Facial scars often are removed and repaired with tiny sutures, leaving a thinner, less noticeable scar that can be improved later with dermabrasion or laser resurfacing.
