Cardiac Rehabilitation

Returning to your regular routine can be frustrating after a heart attack or heart surgery. Many people feel frightened and/or unsure of what they can safely do after a major cardiac event. The Saint Joseph's Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation Program can help you improve your heart health, strength and stamina -- and confidence.

A cardiac rehabilitation program -- also called cardiac rehab -- is a coordinated exercise and education program designed to help you improve your physical endurance and strength following a cardiac illness or heart surgery -- and to set you on the course for a healthier lifestyle.

Established in 1984, Saint Joseph's Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation Program offers you a physically and emotionally supportive place where you can recover at your own pace under the supervision of an experienced and compassionate team of specialists. Through our program, we not only help you return to normal health, we provide the tools that enable you and your family to stay that way.

Cardiac Rehabilitation at Saint Joseph's

Few programs in the United States have as comprehensive and diverse a cardiac rehabilitation program and support team as Saint Joseph's Hospital. We offer a three-phase program that is certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. In addition to general cardiac rehabilitation such as heart attack recovery and heart bypass recovery, we have designed programs specifically to meet the needs of heart failure and heart transplant patients as well. Led by Dr. Basil Margolis, we have assembled a multi-disciplinary team that includes registered nurses with training in coronary care, registered exercise physiologists, staff psychologists, registered dietitians, and pharmacists, all of whom will help develop a program that is tailored to your needs and work with you one-on-one to help you set and reach your rehabilitation goals.

Upon entering the program, you will have a comprehensive evaluation of your condition and heart disease risk factors, and receive a customized exercise plan. We believe that education is extremely important, and during the program you will attend classes that provide a comprehensive overview of heart disease and risk factors such as smoking, blood pressure, cholesterol, weight management, stress, and exercise. If appropriate, we will encourage you to participate in our Knock Out Nicotine Addiction smoking cessation program or our Weigh to Go weight loss program.

All aspects of your exercise training and education will be coordinated by a case manager who will also communicate your progress with your referring physician at regular intervals. In the beginning, your exercise program will be less strenuous and more closely supervised. For example, your heart rhythm will be monitored during exercise and your blood pressure will be tracked. As you gain strength and confidence, your exercise regimen will increase in both intensity and frequency and you'll be less closely monitored. By the end of the program, you'll be encouraged to exercise most days of the week independently. You will also be encouraged to join a wide range of alternative exercise activities such as Yoga, Tai Chi, and Zumba.
