Clinical Cardiology

Saint Joseph's Heart and Vascular Institute offers comprehensive cardiovascular services, including clinical cardiology. Clinical cardiology is the diagnosis, management, and prevention of diseases of the heart and blood vessels. Clinical cardiologists provide a full range of non-invasive testing including electrocardiographs (ECGs), stress tests, and cholesterol and blood pressure evaluations. In addition, they provide guidance about prevention strategies as well as prescribe medications to help you control your condition. Clinical cardiologists provide services in Saint Joseph's hospital, at our diagnostic testing centers, and at practice locations through metropolitan Atlanta.

Convenient Physician Network You Can Trust

Saint Joseph's has more than 80 affiliated cardiologists with offices in more than 20 locations throughout metropolitan Atlanta, providing you with access to a wide range of diagnostic services and treatments at locations that are convenient to you. Our cardiologists provide comprehensive care, including initial evaluations, cardiovascular testing, referrals to any needed specialists, as well as long-term management of your condition.

When appropriate, we take a conservative approach that focuses on lifestyle changes and medications before recommending more invasive therapies. Your clinical cardiologist can help coordinate your heart care by putting you in touch with resources and programs, such as our Heart Center for Women or our cardiac rehabilitation program. In addition, your clinical cardiologist can recommend programs for longer-term needs, such as our heart failure program.

This conservative approach has proven to be effective and helps to spare you from any unnecessary tests or treatments. However, if more invasive treatment is required, your clinical cardiologist will act as your primary heart doctor and help determine the appropriate level of care based on your individual needs. He or she can recommend more invasive tests or treatments, refer you to the right specialist, and guide you through the process. We'll be there for any follow-up care you might need, including referring you to a cardiac rehabilitation program and checking in with you throughout the process.

We offer a comprehensive range of diagnostic tests at our hospital testing center or at affiliated practices, which we use during your initial evaluation and to monitor your condition over time, including:

  • Electrocardiography, which measures the electrical activity of the heart
  • Echocardiography, which uses high-frequency sound waves to view the structure and function of the heart and nearby blood vessels
  • Arrhythmia monitoring, which helps physicians detect heart rhythm abnormalities
  • Stress testing, which helps doctors measure how well the heart works during periods of stress or exercise
  • Nuclear imaging, in which a tiny amount of radioactive tracer is injected into the patient's bloodstream to help physicians assess the heart function

Inpatient and Critical Care

Saint Joseph's has cardiologists on call at our hospitals 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, to provide consultations for all patients who have cardiovascular concerns. This includes patients who arrive at our emergency department and patients whose cardiovascular symptoms emerge while at our facilities for other reasons. The clinical cardiologists ensure that patients receive the necessary level of care -- which can include treatment in our state-of-the-art Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit and our dedicated cardiac medical/surgical step-down units.

Our clinical cardiologists continue to monitor emergent patients through discharge. As patients progress, the focus of care turns to helping patients make a successful transition back to normal activities through instruction about medications, lifestyles changes, and rehabilitation, as appropriate. Our clinical cardiologists are also available for long-term care if patients require it.
