Vascular Care & Rehabilitation

At Saint Joseph's Heart and Vascular Institute, we provide comprehensive vascular care and rehabilitation services. We offer the full spectrum of treatment methods, including medical management, lifestyle interventions, and minimally invasive and open surgical procedures. Our experienced, highly trained, and dedicated medical professionals take a collaborative, team-based approach to your care, quickly and accurately diagnosing your vascular condition and recommending the most effective and appropriate treatment. We have an expert and committed staff that includes vascular surgeons, interventional radiologists, and cardiologists, many with specialized areas of interest, devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease.

Saint Joseph's Heart and Vascular Institute offers comprehensive vascular care, providing the full range of prevention and screening, diagnosis, and treatment, including medical management, minimally invasive, and open surgical treatments. This gives you options you might not have with other providers, that may only (and occasionally) treat a handful of conditions, and ensures that you receive the most effective treatment for your circumstances.

Saint Joseph's is a place where technology meets compassion -- we offer state-of-the-art facilities in a patient-friendly environment. You are a true partner in your care, and we stress open communication with you. We will take the time to fully discuss your condition, its diagnosis, and your treatment options. We also take the time to listen to your questions and concerns, as well as those of your family. We communicate openly with your primary care physician and any other healthcare professional involved in your care.

Screening and Prevention

Like heart disease, you can control many of the risk factors for cardiovascular disease by exercising more, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a healthier diet, and quitting smoking. The first step is to know your risk for heart and vascular disease. Saint Joseph's can provide you with information about your risk, as well as guidance about how to make the lifestyle changes that can help prevent a first or recurrent vascular event such as stroke.

We offer a wide range of both non-invasive and invasive diagnostic services, including diagnostic imaging such as duplex imaging, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), high speed computed tomography (CT) scans, and diagnostic and therapeutic angiography. Our experience with peripheral angiography is unparalleled with our vascular surgeons having performed angiography since the 1970s. They have adopted and assisted in the development of new technologies from inception, thereby maintaining their position at the forefront of vascular care.

Long considered a "man's disease," many women are unaware of the cardiovascular risk they may face. In conjunction with the Women's Heart Center, we offer screening developed especially for women, as well as our stroke prevention plan. Click here for more information about the Women's Heart Center at Saint Joseph's.

Some conditions don't necessarily require immediate treatment and can be closely monitored. You can feel secure knowing that our state-of-the-art equipment can quickly and accurately diagnose conditions such as abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) or carotid artery disease (a risk factor for stroke). Through a strategy commonly called "watchful waiting," we can employ the same diagnostics to track conditions and intervene with minimally invasive or surgical procedures if and when they are needed.

Similarly, many conditions can be treated conservatively with lifestyle changes and/or medications, and we often recommend these conservative approaches. We offer medical and walking therapy for conditions such as intermittent claudication, which is leg pain while walking caused by narrowed arteries. We recommend a more invasive approach only when it is appropriate. If your condition requires a more invasive approach, we have a staff of seven board-certified surgeons who focus solely on vascular disease. They are skilled in minimally invasive and open surgical techniques, including a wide range of treatments for varicose veins. Our expertise goes beyond that of many of other centers. For example, Saint Joseph's Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine Center serves patients who have non-healing or complex wounds or those who require pressurized oxygen delivery using hyperbaric technology.

Vascular Rehabilitation

Saint Joseph's introduced Atlanta's first vascular rehabilitation program in 2004 to help patients with peripheral vascular disease function better and to stop or reverse the risk factors that lead to vascular disease, such as smoking. Developing Tomorrow's Treatments Today

Saint Joseph's vascular professionals also perform clinical research, offering the right patients the opportunity to receive treatments that are not widely available. Saint Joseph's is one of six institutes in the world undertaking angiogenesis trials, which focus on increasing blood vessel growth in patients with vascular disease whose hearts or limbs lack adequate blood supply.
