Care Plan: Bunion and Hammertoe Surgery

Before the Surgery:

  • Our staff will call you with your surgery date and location.
  • On the night before surgery-- take a shower, have a late meal, and fast after midnight.
  • Arrive at least one hour before your surgery time.
  • Check with our staff before you take your regular medications.

After Your Surgery:

  • Keep your foot elevated (above your heart) and your dressing clean.
  • You may apply some weight on your heel while using crutches or a walker.
  • Take your medications as instructed.

First Office Visit:

  • Planned 14 days after your surgery.
  • We will change your dressings and remove skin sutures if needed.
  • Continue with limited weight on your heel, Do allow your foot to get wet.
  • Ask for a refill of pain medications if needed

Final Office Visit:

  • Planned six to eight weeks after your surgery.
  • We will take foot X-rays to check your healing.
  • We will remove pins from your toes if present.
  • We will give you a toe separator for you to use for two months.
  • Begin a gradual return to weight bearing in wide shoes and with only gentle motion of the toes.
  • You may still experience swelling in your toes.
  • Return to wearing regular shoes after three months.
