To refer a patient for hand transplant evaluation or to speak with a member of our staff, please call 1-855-EMORYTX (366-7989) – toll free number, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The clinical trial is open to men and women between 18 and 55 years of age with below-the-elbow amputation of one or both hands. Candidates must be able to give informed consent.

Exclusion criteria include:

• Any condition that prevents the candidate from participating in serial follow-up.

• Any condition that would interfere with the candidate's participation in study protocol or confound the interpretation of the data.

• Any active malignancy or history of blood or bone cancer. Candidates with basal or squamous cell carcinomas (skin cancers) may be enrolled providing these are eliminated prior to transplant. For amputations due to malignancy, the candidate must have been cancer-free for five years to be eligible.

• Any known immunodeficiency syndrome.

• Current or peak Panel Reactive Antibody (PRA) due to alloantibodies > 20 percent receiving their first allograft.

• Inability or unwillingness to comply with protocol monitoring and therapy, including, among others, a history of noncompliance, circumstances where compliance with protocol requirements is not feasible due to living conditions, travel restrictions, access to urgent medical services.

• Pregnancy or unwillingness to practice birth control methods during the first year of the study.

• Prior transplants.

• Cytomegalovirus and/or Epstein Barr virus negative patients.

• Unwillingness to undergo blood transfusion if necessary.

• Active psychiatric and/or substance abuse disorders that would 1) impair the subject's ability to provide informed consent; 2) compromise compliance with transplantation-related medical care; or 3) otherwise significantly threaten the successful completion of this protocol.
