Medical Advances

Surgeons at Emory Urology continue to advance the treatment of prostate cancer via the use of the da Vinci robot in minimally invasive surgery. The da Vinci robot allows Emory surgeons to use the laparoscopic approach for reconstructive surgery, urinary incontinence, and to operate on prostate, kidney, bladder, and testicular cancer.

These minimally invasive procedures are performed through 3 or 4 very small holes. The surgeon sits at a console a few feet from the patient and views a 3-dimensional image of the surgical field while operating in real-time. The system translates the surgeon’s hand, wrist and finger movements into precise movements of the surgical instruments. Using high definition, 3-dimensional imaging, our surgeons see vital structures with more detail and are able to operate with extreme precision. Patients have an extremely safe operation, loose less blood, go home a day or two after the operation, and are fully recovered in few weeks.

Patient Advantages

  • High-definition, 3-dimensional imaging allows surgeons to see vital structures better than ever before.
  • Utilizing a minimally invasive approach means patients heal more quickly and go home a day or two after the procedure.
  • There is less chance of infection, hernia, or need for blood transfusion when this procedure is used.
