"Vocal cord lesion laser therapy was as easy as a dental procedure."

DaryllAbout seven or eight years ago, I began having fairly constant vocal hoarseness. I went to see an ENT physician and was diagnosed with polyps on my vocal cords, probably tied to the papilloma virus. I began undergoing regular procedures to remove these growths. Three times a year for seven years I would go into the OR and they would put me to sleep and remove the polyps with a laser or ‘shaver’.
I was a little nervous the first time that Dr. Adam Klein treated me with the pulsed KTP laser. Getting the scope and the numbing agent in place made me feel like I was drowning, but once the numbing agent kicked in, it really wasn’t that bad. In fact, after the numbness goes away, there’s no residual pain. Except for the fact that a couple of days later my voice returns and sounds a lot better, I don’t even notice that he’s been there.
Being able to treat it awake with the laser is something that I was looking for, for years. I don’t relish the fact of being put to sleep every two to three months, mainly because I’m a little concerned about how many brain cells I’m killing when I’m being put to sleep.

When my voice gets really bad, I have no idea what’s going to come out when I open my mouth. It makes you a little self-conscious.
The KTP treatment is almost like a dental procedure, you are just numbed and in the chair. I can come by here and have a couple of polyps lasered off my vocal cords and then go to straight to work.
Before I would wait until my voice got pretty bad and then I would go get put to sleep and have a fairly decent voice. This is easier so we are doing it more often. It allows me to keep a standard level of voice and when I hear it start to go downhill, I go in and he takes off the polyp.
It’s great for me. It’s made this easier for me to deal with on a day-to-day basis.
