KTP Laser Therapy

The Emory Voice Center is the only voice center in Atlanta or the southeast that offers patients with vocal cords lesions an innovative option for treatment – Awake Laser Therapy, also known as Pulsed KTP Laser Therapy. This delicate laser technology allows doctors to treat vocal cord lesions, such as polyps or tumors, as an outpatient treatment without anesthesia. In addition, the vocal cord laser procedure allows patients to be treated without the risk of radiation or damage to the underlying tissue, which better preserves the natural voice. For patients with reoccurring conditions that require regular treatment, such as laryngeal papilloma or laryngeal dysplasia, this treatment is a welcome innovation.

Prior to the use of the pulsed KTP laser, patients with vocal cord lesions regularly underwent a direct laryngoscopy, which is a surgical procedure performed in the operating room that requires general anesthesia. In contrast, the pulsed KTP laser treatment requires only topical anesthesia, poses minimal risk of damage to vocal fold tissue, and takes significantly less time than a traditional procedure.
