Carpal Tunnel Release Surgery

Carpal tunnel release surgery is performed on patients diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome. This procedure is performed to relieve pressure on the median nerve, the nerve that is compressed and causing the numbness and tingling in the hand. Our hand surgeons at Emory use an open carpal tunnel release procedure.

The hand surgeon will make a small incision in the palm of the hand to expose the transverse carpal ligament. The surgeon will cut the transverse carpal ligament, relieving pressure on the median nerve. Then the surgeon closes the small incision with sutures. The patient may be required to wear a wrist splint while the wrist heals.
