About Dr. Herrera

Dr. Robert D. Herrera is an experienced primary care physician who has been caring for patients and their families since 1997. Dr. Herrera sees patients ages 18 and over for a wide range of illnesses and conditions. He is board certified in internal medicine and has been practicing with Emory Primary Care at Saint Joseph’s since 2012. He enjoys the challenges and rewards of helping his patients recover and maintain their health.

Dr. Herrera received his bachelor’s degree in biology from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and earned his doctor of medicine from Georgetown University School of Medicine. He went on to complete a combined internship and residency in internal medicine at Emory University Department of Medicine. Dr. Herrera did further training with the National Institutes of Health Office of Extramural Research, where he studied “Protecting Human Research Participants.”

Primary Care: A Path to Helping Others
Both of Dr. Herrera’s parents were physicians, and his interest in medicine began early. But while they were specialists, he was drawn to primary care with its wider variety of patients and challenges. He enjoys getting to know his patients well enough to understand their individual health issues and to personalize their care.

During his medical training, Dr. Herrera developed an interest in cardiovascular issues such as high blood pressure and unhealthy cholesterol levels. He retains that interest, which adds to his skills as a primary care doctor. Dr. Herrera believes the most important goal for physicians is to help others, and he works hard to help his patients be as healthy as they can be.

For Dr. Herrera, that includes spending as much time as possible with each patient. He is a skilled listener, which helps him develop relationships with his patients. This allows him to personalize his advice about preventive health care beyond the usual age and gender standards. Dr. Herrera strives to understand not only his patients’ current medical issues, but to provide individualized advice about healthy lifestyle habits and other preventive strategies that can help maintain good health.

Professional Experience and Research
Prior to joining Emory Primary Care at Saint Joseph’s, Dr. Herrera practiced with Internal Medicine Associates of Atlanta, Saint Joseph’s Medical Group. He was also a sub-investigator at Executive Health and Research Associates in Atlanta.

As a student, Dr. Herrera was a basic cardiac life support instructor at Georgetown University and research assistant at Georgetown University School of Medicine Department of Pathology.

Beginning when he was a student and extending into his years of practice, Dr. Herrera participated in numerous research studies. This research focused on areas related to the practice of primary care, such as how patients respond to specific treatments for diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, high cholesterol, prostate cancer and other conditions.

Personal Background
Dr. Herrera grew up in a suburban area in New York and came to Atlanta from Washington, D.C. He is married and has two children. When he isn’t caring for patients at Emory Primary Care, he enjoys spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoys playing tennis, especially with his family.
