Perimenopause Care

Transitioning to Menopause

The obstetricians-gynecologists (OB-GYNs) at Emory Healthcare are experienced at offering the latest evidence-based care and insight on how you can stay comfortable, confident and continue to enjoy your favorite activities during perimenopause. But, the first step is understanding what it means and what you can expect.

What is Perimenopause?

Perimenopause literally means “around menopause.” During perimenopause, which happens at a different time for every woman, your body starts to make the transition into menopause. Some may notice changes as early as their mid-30s, while others may not notice changes to their menstrual cycles until they’re in their 40s.

You’ll experience a changing level of estrogen in your body during perimenopause, which is what brings on the most noticeable symptoms, such as:

  • Irregular periods
  • Menstrual cycles that don’t release an egg
  • Menopause-like symptoms (hot flashes, vaginal dryness, trouble sleeping)

Managing Your Symptoms

The first step in taking control of your symptoms is talking with your OB-GYN. An open and honest conversation about this very normal and natural transition can help you and your doctor make a plan that helps you find relief from your symptoms.

At Emory, many of our OB-GYNs are certified by the North American Menopause Society (NAMS). This certification demonstrates their commitment to staying up to date on the latest, evidence-based research and treatments. They regularly participate in training and seminars, review peer-published research that has been carefully vetted and interpret and share that information with you. Here, you can be confident that you’re always receiving safe and effective therapies to manage your symptoms.

We understand that perimenopause is just one part of your life. It’s not who you are, and it certainly shouldn’t limit what you can do. We’ll work with you to help you not only find medical therapies and treatments that ease symptoms but also to learn proven lifestyle changes that can make a significant difference in your comfort and overall health. That may include:

  • Exercising regularly
  • Eating healthy
  • Meditating
  • Finding a hobby that helps relax you
  • Spending time with friends and family members
  • Talking to someone such as a friend who’s experiencing perimenopause or a licensed therapist
