Emory Running Medicine
Program – Prevention and Treatment

Our Approach to Treating and Preventing Issues

At the Emory Running Medicine Program, we understand the mechanics of running and the stress it can put on your body. We offer runners of every age and ability leading-edge evaluation and treatment options. Our experts treat running-related conditions to improve performance and prevent injury.
Our team works together to develop care plans that meet your individual health goals. You’ll have access to a multidisciplinary team with a wide range of expertise. Together, they ensure you have access to the care you need.

Our specialists include:

  • Endocrinologists
  • Gynecologists
  • Physical therapists
  • Sports dieticians
  • Sports medicine physicians
  • Sports psychologist

We start by getting to know you. Our specialists review your running history, including your training routine, shoes, experience and goals. We also examine your life stressors. Then we detail any prior injuries or issues affecting your running ability. Our team takes your whole health history into account.
Factors we consider include:

  • Hormonal issues
  • Medications
  • Nutritional needs
  • Sleep habits

Your physical exam and tests typically include:

  • Analysis of pain, including intensity, duration, frequency and history
  • Bone density test and blood tests
  • Consultation with experts in related fields, including nutrition, sports psychology, endocrinology, gynecology and surgery if needed
  • Dynamic motion tests identify and measure incorrect movements
  • Electromyography (EMG) tests measure electrical activity in your muscles during movement
  • Imaging tests, such as MRIs or X-rays, view tendons, joints and bones
  • Nerve conduction studies (NCS) measure the speed your nerves conduct electrical signals
  • Range of motion evaluations measure flexibility in your joints and determines how well you move
  • Static posture evaluations identify and measure muscle imbalances
  • Strength tests assess imbalance, muscle weakness and endurance

Advanced Evaluation, Treatment and Injury Prevention

The Emory Running Medicine Program offers advanced, innovative care options to help improve running performance and reduce the chance of injury.

Biomechanical Evaluations

A biomechanical evaluation looks at how your body moves while running. Our team uses it to assess the function of your legs, feet, ankles and knees. Results from these evaluations help guide your team as we work to improve your running form, increase efficiency and enhance your running experience.

RED-S Management

Relative Energy Deficiency in Sports (RED-S) occurs when you do not consume enough food to support the physical demands you’re placing on your body. RED-S causes multiple symptoms, such as fatigue, rapid weight loss, bone loss, depression, and low libido. Our physicians monitor your physical health. At the same time, our sports psychologists address any underlying mental or emotional issues. And to help establish healthy eating patterns, our dieticians offer education and support.

Regenerative Medicine Techniques

Regenerative medicine uses your body’s natural healing abilities to encourage the growth of new cartilage, ligaments or tendons. The Emory Running Medicine Program offers cellular therapies that inject live cells into your body to promote tissue repair. Treatments include Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy.

Running Gait Evaluations

Chronic overuse causes most running injuries. A running gait evaluation outlines all areas of your running regimen to determine your risk factors. First, our experts review a video of you running.

We examine your:

  • Anatomy
  • Flexibility
  • Posture
  • Strength
  • Training routine

Next, we assess your:

  • Diet
  • Energy level
  • Bone density
  • General health

Then we use our collected information to develop a care plan with solutions designed to improve your performance and prevent injury.

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a noninvasive way to jump-start the healing process. Our experts send shockwaves through your skin which prompts short-term inflammation. Your body responds by increasing circulation and metabolism around the affected area. This process encourages healing, reduces pain and improves mobility.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound imaging uses sound waves to create pictures of your tendons, muscles, ligaments, joints and nerves. Our experts use those images to identify issues affecting your running, such as strains, tears, trapped nerves and other musculoskeletal problems.
