Emory ALS Center

ALS Care in Your Neighborhood

The Emory ALS Center provides integrated care for patients and families with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and related disorders. Our combined expertise allows us to approach and solve problems safely and efficiently.

We work closely with the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the ALS Association of Georgia. Our collaboration allows us to provide better care for people and families dealing with ALS. We use state-of-the-art care to help our patients maintain independence and quality of life.

Diagnosing ALS

It can be difficult to diagnose ALS in its early stages because the disease commonly resembles several other neurological diseases. Since it is a rare disease, it is likely that your physician will refer you to a specialized center like Emory. Here, our neurologists are experienced in the diagnosis and care of ALS patients. We can work with you to rule out other conditions. After diagnosis, we can provide you with specialized care. There are no specific diagnostic tests for ALS. Depending on your symptoms and signs, your neurologist may order other tests.

ALS Treatment and Research

Because there is no known cure for ALS, the course of the disease cannot be reversed. Treatment mainly involves efforts to slow symptoms and progression. Our goal is to provide patients with more comfort and independence.

Research is an important part of our work to diagnose, treat, and find a cure ALS. Our Center participates in clinical trials to better understand the disease and other associated conditions. To learn more about our current research projects and research staff, visit our ALS Research home page.
