Although eye cancers are considered rare, they do happen. Our specialists evaluate and treat patients with eye, eyelid, and orbital tumors, including ocular melanoma, retinoblastoma, lymphoma, periocular (skin tumors around the eye) and other tumors of the eye and surrounding tissue.

As part of the Emory Healthcare network, the Emory Eye Center is uniquely situated to provide the best possible integrated, holistic clinical care and treatment options for patients.

Members of our interdisciplinary ocular oncology and pathology team are retina, cornea and clinical eye pathology specialists who work in collaboration with radiation and medical oncologists, physicists, and other oncology specialists at Emory Healthcare, Winship Cancer Institute, and the Cancer Center at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

This collaborative care gives patients the advantage of seamless coordination of medical, radiation, surgical, and laser treatments within the Emory Healthcare network, including dermatology, neurosurgery, and head and neck surgery.

Drs. Hans E. Grossniklaus, G. Baker Hubbard, and Jill Wells evaluate and treat patients with tumors of the ocular surface and within the eye. Additionally, Dr. Hubbard is a nationally recognized specialist in ocular tumors of children.

Critical in the treatment of eye cancer is the integration of oncology with pathology services. Emory Eye Center provides on-site, world-class eye pathology services in the L. F. Montgomery Laboratory. This laboratory evaluates one of the highest volumes of ocular pathology specimens in the world. Under the direction of Emory Eye Center's internationally recognized ocular oncologist/pathologist, Hans E. Grossniklaus, Montgomery Laboratory provides the expert analysis necessary for ocular oncology diagnosis and treatment.

Dr. Grossniklaus is board certified in both ophthalmology and anatomic pathology. He specializes in diagnostic ophthalmic pathology, ocular oncology and ophthalmic pathology research, including drug delivery. He regularly sees patients with ocular malignancies and other ophthalmic conditions.

Tumors are evaluated to determine the best possible treatment for each patient. Diagnostic options may include a thorough eye examination, ultrasound (echography), photography (fluorescein angiography and/or fundus photography, ocular coherent tomography (OCT), and/or the use of computerized tomography (CT) scan or MRI.
