Pain affects every person differently. Your pain may be the result of cancer, surgery or a traumatic injury. If you experience pain that continues past the normal healing process, it’s considered chronic pain. Emory Clinic pain medicine specialists understand chronic pain conditions and offer treatment options to help relieve your pain symptoms.

As scientists, our research is helping discover new treatments for chronic pain, as well as new ways to use existing effective treatment options. As anesthesiology faculty members at Emory University School of Medicine, Emory Clinic pain medicine specialists are involved with clinical trials in pain medicine and on the leading edge of innovative new ways to treat chronic pain.

Pain medicine specialties

Emory Clinic pain medicine specialists are researchers and teachers, but most importantly: caregivers. We work together with your primary care physician or specialist to develop a personalized treatment plan that takes into account your specific medical history and pain level. Our goal is to improve your quality of life by targeting your pain at its source and providing needed relief.

We treat a range of pain conditions, including:

  • Cancer pain
  • Complex regional pain syndrome
  • Joint pain
  • Low back pain
  • Migraine headaches
  • Myofascial pain syndrome
  • Neck pain
  • Nerve pain, including sciatica and trigeminal neuralgia
  • Phantom limb syndrome
  • Spinal pain
  • Vascular pain

Your individual treatment plan will depend on the source of your pain, as well as your medical history, condition and level of pain. Treatment may include medications, injection therapies, surgery or alternative therapies such as massage. At our pain management center, you can receive both inpatient and outpatient services, depending on your needs.
