Electroconvulsive Therapy
Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is one of the most effective treatments for depression, particularly when a patient has failed medication or needs a rapid improvement in symptoms. Although ECT has long suffered from a negative image as shown in the popular press and movies such as "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest", the modern practice of ECT has come a long way from these stigmatizing portrayals. ECT works by electrically stimulating the brain and improving the release of neurochemicals known to be important in the treatment of depression.
