Step 2: Review Payment Options

Whether paying for your surgery through insurance or out of pocket, there is a $600 program fee for all patients, half of which will be collected at the time of enrollment into the program.

Bariatric surgery is often a covered procedure under many medical insurance plans. Some insurers will only cover bariatric surgery when it is performed at a designated or accredited center. Emory Bariatric Center is accredited by the American College of Surgeons and is designated a Center of Excellence by most major insurance plans. Before deciding on any medical procedure you should ask your insurer whether bariatric surgery is a covered benefit, and what criteria are required for approval.

While the Emory Bariatric Center's weight management programs and surgical interventions are state of the art, we can't guarantee that our services are covered benefits for every insurance plan. The remainder will be collected at your group nutrition class. If for any reason you are not able to progress to surgery, your program fee can be fully or partially refunded, based on the services you have received. Because each patient has different needs, we offer the following payment options:

  • Credit Cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express)
  • Financing - In order to provide patients with access to the superior care, we offer financing options through an independent provider

For more information about financing options, please call 404-778-7777.

Step 3: Schedule Your Consultation

After completing your online seminar, please register.

Please fill out our New Patient Questionnaire and bring it with you to your appointment.

Please arrive at least 20 minutes before your appointment. Please arrive fasting (nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before). In a group meeting led by a member of our team, you will receive important information about how our program works as well as the process of obtaining pre-authorization for surgery. You will then meet individually with our one of our providers for a comprehensive evaluation. You will also have lab work and an EKG completed.

Step 4: Prepare for Surgery

Weight loss surgery is like other major surgeries. The best preparation is to understand the risks and potential benefits and to closely follow your doctor’s instructions.

  • Understand the surgical process and what to expect afterwards
  • Talk to people who have had weight loss surgery or attend a support group to gain valuable insight

Additional Bariatric Patient Resources

We want you to be as informed as possible about bariatric surgery so that you can make the best decision about your health. MyEmmi is an online, interactive patient education tool designed to help you learn about your surgical procedure. We request all surgery patients to view the assigned sessions before their surgery. Click here to access this free patient education material.

As part of our ongoing mission to provide the best possible weight-loss and weight management experience, the Emory Bariatric Center has implemented an online resource to help patients track their weight, exercise, and food intake. Access to the Exemplo Medical Patient Portal is available to current patients. When you schedule your first physician visit, you will receive registration information.

We strongly encourage all bariatric surgery patients to attend monthly support group meetings (at least one of which should be before surgery). This monthly group is available for patients considering bariatric surgery and for those who have already had bariatric surgery at Emory or elsewhere. Led by dietitians, health-fitness specialists, and psychologists, group meetings are a place for patients to address surgery's impact on their lives, explore their changing motivators, while learning about ways of incorporating lifestyle changes for long term success. Lifetime membership in the support group is included in the program fee for Emory patients. Individuals who received bariatric surgery elsewhere will be charged a nominal fee.

Bariatric Surgery Support Group meets on the second Monday of each month in the Emory Bariatric Center on the 7th floor of the Medical Office Tower (MOT) at Emory University Hospital Midtown - 550 West Peachtree Street, NE Atlanta, GA 30308 from 5:45 to 7 p.m.

The Emory Bariatric Center and the YMCA of Metro Atlanta are partnering to create a healthier you. All Emory Bariatric Center patients are eligible for a reduced membership rate at any Metro Atlanta YMCA location. As a member, you are eligible for many great services including THE COACH APPROACH, a one-on-one wellness coaching program tailored to your current level of fitness, motivation and work/life balance. Participants in this program found that they lost weight, had more energy and felt better overall. Simply mention to any staff member at the Emory Bariatric Center that you would like to take advantage of this great service. We will email you a link, and you can get started right away.

In general, the higher an adult's age, especially above 60 years, the higher the risk of complications or unfavorable outcomes from bariatric surgery. Although age is not the sole criterion for a decision or recommendation for elective bariatric surgery, it is one of many potential risk factors that will be considered when assessing an individual's risks and benefits of a surgical approach to obesity treatment. If it is deemed by the surgeon and our medical bariatrician that bariatric surgery is not in your best interests, we can offer alternative non-surgical treatment options.

In order to be considered for a surgical evaluation, you are required to submit a detailed letter from your treating physician(s) that includes past surgical and medical history, psychological illnesses/diagnoses, co-morbidities, DOB, height, weight and BMI. The physician(s) writing this letter on your behalf must be able to provide a recommendation stating that he/she believes you are a potential candidate for bariatric surgery based on his/her assessment. This letter should not be older than 60 days.

Individuals with a BMI above 60 will not be evaluated by an Emory Bariatric Center surgeon. However, we do offer a comprehensive medical bariatric program designed to help overweight and obese individuals lose weight without undergoing surgery. We strongly encourage you to consider this approach. Once your BMI is at or below 60, one of our surgeons will see you for a first consult, provided you submit the information required (see below).

Patients under the age of 60 with a BMI of 60 or below may move forward with scheduling an appointment. Prior to scheduling an appointment, we ask patients to provide a letter from a licensed medical professional (MA, LPN, RN, PA, NP, MD) that states date of birth, height, weight, and BMI as well the practice/facility name and contact number of the medical professional who signs the form. This letter must be less than 60 days old at the time your first appointment is scheduled at the Center. Our schedulers are unable to schedule your first appointment unless this documentation is submitted and scanned into your file.
