Medication & Herbal Supplement Precautions

Check with your heart failure cardiologist before starting/changing to any of the below medications or herbal supplements*:

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs)

  • Ibuprofen
  • Indomethacin
  • Naproxen

Calcium channel blockers

  • Diltiazem
  • Nifedipine
  • Verapamil

Certain anti-arrhythmic medications

  • Quinidine
  • Disopyramide
  • Procainamide
  • Flecainide

*Please discuss with your physician before taking any over-the-counter vitamins or herbal supplements. Although individuals with a chronic illness often take herbal supplements (also called “naturoceuticals” or “nutraceuticals”), caution should be taken to avoid potential medication interactions.

Patients with heart failure metabolize (process) medications differently due to alterations in blood flow (circulation), and are predisposed to toxic drug interactions between cardiac medications and some herbs or supplements.
