Headache

A headache is pain anywhere in the region of the head or neck. It can be a symptom of a number of different conditions of the head and neck. The most common types of headache are the "primary headache disorders", which include migraines and tension-type headache. Other primary headache disorders include trigeminal neuralgia, cluster headache and hemicrania continua. Symptoms can include pain, giddiness, nausea, vomiting and blurriness of vision. At the Emory Pain Center, we primarily treat cervicogenic headaches (headaches that originate from a neck problem such as arthritis) as well as certain nerve disorders including trigeminal and occipital neuralgia.

How is Headache Treated?

The treatment depends of effectively managing the underlying pathology which causes the headache. Tricyclic antidepressants often act as an effective treatment for chronic headaches. Drugs such as ergotamine may be also used to effectively treat migraines. Various minimally invasive injections can be performed to help both diagnose and treat headaches.
