Ryan White Program

About Us

Who Was Ryan White?

Ryan White was a courageous young man who was diagnosed with AIDS following a blood transfusion in December 1984. He was diagnosed at age 13 while living in Kokomo, Indiana, and was given six months to live. When Ryan tried to return to school, he fought AIDS-related discrimination in his community. Along with his mother Jeanne White Ginder, Ryan fought for his right to attend school and became the face of public education about his disease. Surprising his doctors, Ryan White lived five years longer than predicted. He died in April 1990, one month before his high school graduation and only months before Congress passed the legislation bearing his name in August 1990 - the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act.

Our Program

Emory’s Ryan White Program receives federal grant funding through the Ryan White CARE Act. The grant provides those who are underinsured or uninsured with access to specialty services such as nutrition, mental health, medical social work, short-term/long-term medication copayment assistance, and other support services. The grant does not replace other third-party payers, like Medicaid or Medicare.

Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program is divided into five parts, and Emory Healthcare has been providing Part C services since 1993 and Part A services since 2002.

Services include:

  • HIV Medical Care
  • Case Management and Social Support Services
  • Counseling and Education
  • Treatment Therapies
  • Access to HIV Research
  • Laboratory Tests
  • Medication to Prevent and Treat Illness
  • Medication Adherence Counseling
  • Mental Health Care and Support Groups
