Our otologists/neurotologists Dr. Douglas Mattox, Dr. Malcolm Graham and Dr. Esther Vivas provide medical and surgical care for those with diseases affecting the ears, balance system, temporal bone, skull base and related structures of the head and neck. This includes common ear problems like hearing loss, infectious conditions of the ear, vestibular schwanomma (acoustic neuroma), cholesteatoma and otosclerosis.

Head and neck cancer affects the mouth, throat, nose and sinuses and salivary glands. Oral and oropharyngeal, laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers are included in this group of diseases. As specialists, our teams develop groundbreaking treatments that produce better outcomes and are adopted by other leading cancer centers. The care of Head and Neck Cancer is complex and frequently requires a coordinated multidisciplinary team approach due to the need for a combination of treatments such as surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy to provide optimum outcomes for patients. Dr. Mark El-Deiry, Dr. Mihir Patel and Dr. J. Trad Wadsworth are world-class surgeons practicing at the Emory Head and Neck Cancer Surgery Center. These surgeons also are members of the Winship Cancer Institute, Georgia’s first and only National Cancer Institute (NCI). Our surgeons have a wealth of experience and collaborate with clinical partners in hematology and medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology and pathology. Speech and swallowing therapists, nurses, navigators, social workers, technicians and others are all part of the comprehensive cancer care team and collaborate to enhance the patient and family experience. Our surgeons also are experienced in Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS), which offers a less invasive approach with faster recovery in selected cases. Our experienced microvascular reconstructive team provides superior care for patients in need of major reconstruction after treatment of their cancers.
The Emory Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery Clinic is a patient-centered practice equipped to provide state-of-the-art care and surgical consultation for thyroid and parathyroid disorders. Dr. Amy Chen and Dr. J. Trad Wadsworth provide patients with the opportunity to be evaluated by an in-office ultrasound of the thyroid, so the pathology can be discussed and visualized by the patient and the surgeon. In most instances, a fine needle biopsy can be performed in the office. In collaboration with Endocrine services at Emory and Winship Cancer Institute, all patients are presented at the multidisciplinary thyroid tumor conference for comprehensive treatment recommendations.
At the Emory Voice Center, our laryngologists Dr. Michael Johns, Dr. Adam Klein, and Dr. Jeanne Hatcher specialize in care for the professional voice, disorders of the larynx (voice box), upper airway and swallowing. The clinical care team at the Emory Voice Center offers state-of-the-art medical, behavioral, and surgical intervention for voice, swallowing and airway conditions. Many interventions can be performed with the patient awake or lightly sedated thus avoiding the risks of general anesthesia. The Emory Sinus, Nasal & Allergy Center is an unparalleled specialty care resource with nationally recognized rhinologists specializing in the treatment of nasal, sinus, allergy and anterior skull base problems. Emory rhinologists use their advanced sub-specialty training and expertise to address complex sinus problems such as fungal sinusitis, persistent sinus problems despite prior medical or surgical interventions, infections and tumors involving the nasal cavity, sinuses, medial orbit; anterior skull base and brain; cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea, respiratory allergy affecting the nose and sinuses; and eye/orbital problems such as tearing and proptosis (bulging of the eyes).
Nasal problems that range from difficulty breathing, recurrent infection, to skull base tumors can almost always be managed with endoscopic techniques through the nostrils without external skin incisions. Our rhinologists Dr. John DelGaudio, Dr. Zara Patel, Dr. Sarah Wise and Dr. Charles Moore provide state-of-the-art care diagnostic and management of nasal problems. In collaboration with Emory’s Department of Neurosurgery, the rhinology surgeons have extensive experience in Pituitary sugary.
