Hearing Loss
Overview
Hearing loss can develop at any age and may be caused by many factors like chronic exposure to loud noises. About one-third of people in the United States between the ages of 65 and 75 have some degree of hearing loss. Other factors, such as excessive earwax, can temporarily reduce how well your ears conduct sounds. Hearing loss is defined as one of three types:
- Sensorineural Hearing Loss – Involves the inner ear
- Conductive Hearing Loss – Involves the outer or middle ear
- Mixed Hearing Loss – A combination of sensorineural and conductive
While you cannot reverse most types of hearing loss, you and your doctor or a hearing specialist can take steps to improve what you hear.
