This portion of the website provides information on inpatient care of individuals with Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). Emory Healthcare (EHC) has used its Serious Communicable Diseases Unit (SCDU) to care for these patients. This section provides background about the SCDU and detailed operational protocols for the safe delivery of care to patients with EVD. Because the SCDU is prepared to take care of a wide range of pathogens, protocols are provided that may reference other organisms. However, primary emphasis is placed on the care of patients with EVD and the rigid biosafety protocols required to safely do so. Practical information is provided about staffing, training materials, team effectiveness and infection control. In addition, occupational health protocols are provided to allow for active surveillance of members of the direct care team, individuals who handle specimens and anyone involved in the waste management stream. Our goal is for you to learn from the care we provide on our SCDU and adapt it to your own care setting.
