Neurosurgery Second Opinion Program

After being diagnosed with a neurosurgical condition, patients may be frightened, anxious and have several questions regarding their next steps of care. Getting a second opinion can help patients make important treatment decisions and can provide peace of mind. Emory Healthcare’s Neurosurgery Second Opinion Program offers local, out-of-state and international patients the convenience of receiving a second opinion without the coordination and expenses associated with traveling. Your second opinion will be provided by our team of internationally recognized surgeons and neuroradiologists in all subspecialties of neurosurgery.

Our program offers remote second opinions on a wide range of neurosurgical diagnoses including, but not limited to:

The fee for a remote second opinion is $500. Please note this is a self-pay fee, as most insurance plans will not cover the cost of a remote second opinion. If your neurosurgeon needs additional interpretation of your imaging by a neuroradiologist, an additional $200 fee will be charged.

How it Works

Step 1: Contact our office at 404-778-5770 and request a remote second opinion consult. After your request is received, you can expect a call from your second opinion coordinator within one business day.

Step 2: Your coordinator will walk you through the items needed for us to complete your second opinion including:

Step 3: After these items and your payment have been received via our secure Emory Blue Patient Portal, you will be provided with a written second opinion report created by an Emory neurosurgeon and neuroradiologist based on your case, within 7 – 10 business days. Your report will include an assessment and recommendations based on the records and imaging provided.

Frequently Asked Questions

You will need to provide us with your most recent medical records, recent imaging (can include MRI, CT scans or X-rays), a completed second opinion questionnaire and a signed consent form (depending on your state of residence, a treating physician form may also be needed). Your second opinion coordinator will assist you in getting this information to us via our secure, electronic patient portal. If you are not able to access the patient portal, please fax all required documents to 404-778-3279, Attn: Neurosurgery Remote Second Opinion.

The fee for a second opinion is $500. This includes an extensive review of your case and a written second opinion report by an Emory neurosurgeon. In your written second opinion report, you can expect to receive information on your physician’s treatment recommendation and/or more information regarding other treatment options

After first review of your case, your neurosurgeon may need an opinion/interpretation of your imaging by a neuroradiologist. In the event a neuroradiology interpretation is needed, an additional $200 fee will be charged. You will be notified before any additional fees are charged. You will also have the opportunity to speak to the neuroradiologist who interprets your imaging via phone if you have any additional questions.

At this time, most insurance plans will not cover the cost of a remote second opinion. The fee for a second opinion is a self-pay fee. Unfortunately, Emory Healthcare Department of Neurosurgery cannot file a claim with your insurance provider, and cannot provide any CPT codes for this service.

After your records, imaging, completed questionnaire, signed consent and payment have been received, your written second opinion report will be available within 7 - 10 business days.

Your second opinion will be completed by a neurosurgeon who specializes in your diagnosis. You may request that a specific neurosurgeon complete your second opinion, however due to specialty and surgeon availability we cannot guarantee that your opinion will be provided by the neurosurgeon you request. Ask your second opinion coordinator if you have additional questions regarding the surgeon that completes your second opinion.

Once your second opinion is complete, you will receive a written second opinion report provided by an Emory Neurosurgeon and possibly an Emory Neuroradiologist. The Neurosurgery Second Opinion program does not include an in-person consultation or any type of virtual/video consultation. After you have received your written second opinion report, if you choose to continue with Emory for your care, please contact our office at 404-778-5770 and we will work with you to schedule an in-person appointment with our surgeons.

If you would like to schedule an in-person appointment, please contact our office at 404-778-5770 and we can coordinate an appointment with the same surgeon that provided your second opinion, or another surgeon of your choice based on your diagnosis.
