About the School of Radiologic Technology

A radiologic technologist that specializes in the use of X-rays to create images of the body is a radiographer. Radiographers perform a wide variety of diagnostic X-ray procedures, including examinations of the skeletal system, the chest, and abdomen. They administer contrast media to visualize the gastrointestinal tract and genitourinary system. They also assist the radiologist during more specialized contrast media procedures, such as those used to visualize the spinal cord (myelography) and the joint spaces (arthrography).

Emory Decatur Hospital’s School of Radiologic Technology offers radiology courses to prepare students to take the national American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) exam. Upon completion of the radiology courses and passing the exam, the graduate becomes a registered radiologic technologist (radiographer): R.T. (R). Students in Emory Decatur Hospital’s radiology courses have access to the latest available knowledge, skills, and equipment. The mission of the Emory Decatur Hospital School of Radiologic Technology is to graduate competent students who will function efficiently and professionally as entry-level radiographers qualified to sit for the ARRT exam while supporting the mission, vision, and values of Emory Decatur Hospital.

Our radiologic technology program has an Articulation Agreement with Georgia State University (GSU) at Perimeter College. Graduates will be conferred an Associate of Science degree in Radiologic Technology by the college upon successful completion of college prerequisites and the radiologic technology component at Emory Decatur Hospital.

Note: The Radiography pathway at Georgia State University at Perimeter College is no longer accepting students in this pathway as of January 1, 2022.

Radiology Courses

During the first semester of radiology courses, in addition to rotating through diagnostic imaging areas, the student will begin rotating through Computerized Tomography (CT). The student will begin rotating through Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) during their 4th semester of radiology courses. The student may select two elective rotations in the specialty areas (excluding Diagnostic Breast Center) during the fifth semester.

Imaging Services at Emory Decatur Hospital includes several diagnostic radiology sections, the outpatient Diagnostic Imaging Center, and various specialty areas located at several hospital campuses. Our main diagnostic section includes five procedure rooms that use computed and digital radiography systems. Radiographic equipment is located in the surgery and emergency departments. Mobile units are used throughout the hospital. In addition, we use a state-of-the-art picture archival and communications system (PACS). This innovation allows the production and interpretation of radiographs to be accomplished with computer systems as opposed to traditional film-based methods.
