Martin G. Sanda, MD, is an internationally recognized prostate cancer surgeon and scientist. His clinical practice includes robotic prostatectomy and robotic cystectomy, with a focus on advancing both surgical and non-surgical approaches to cancer care and enhancing survivorship outcomes.
Dr. Sanda serves as the Louis McDonald Orr Distinguished Professor of Urology at Emory University School of Medicine and director of the Prostate Cancer Program at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University. He joined Emory in 2013 and served as chair of the Department of Urology at Emory University School of Medicine and service chief for Emory Healthcare until 2024.
Before coming to Emory, Dr. Sanda was a professor of surgery in urology at Harvard Medical School and director of the Prostate Cancer Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He also co-led the Prostate Cancer Program at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Dr. Sanda is the principal investigator of three multi-center consortium studies funded by the National Cancer Institute and the Prostate Cancer Foundation. These studies aim to develop urine tests for detecting prostate cancer, establish benchmarks for improving quality of life among cancer survivors, and create innovative prostate cancer vaccines. More than 4,400 patients have enrolled in these studies, with findings published in leading medical journals including The Journal of the American Medical Association and The New England Journal of Medicine.
Dr. Sanda earned a Bachelor of Arts in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale University, graduating cum laude in 1983. He received his medical degree from Columbia University in 1987, followed by general surgery residency training at the Medical College of Virginia and a surgical oncology fellowship at the National Cancer Institute. He completed his urology residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
He has served as chair of the Prostate and Genitourinary Collaborative Group of the National Cancer Institute’s Early Detection Research Network (2007–2010), led two nationwide NCI Cooperative Group prostate cancer clinical trials, and participated in numerous federal funding review panels. Since 2011, he has served on the Research Council of the American Urological Association. Dr. Sanda has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications, with his work cited over 5,000 times in biomedical literature.
