About

Dr. Adam Lorentz is an Associate Professor of Urology at the Emory University School of Medicine and Chief of Urology at Emory University Hospital Midtown. He graduated from the Honors Program at the University of Georgia with Bachelor of Science degrees in Genetics and Psychology. He attended medical school at the Emory University School of Medicine, where he participated widely in volunteer service locally and abroad, including work with the Emory Haiti Alliance. He went on to complete his internship and residency training at Emory and joined Emory Urology as a faculty member in 2018. His clinical interests include urologic cancers, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), kidney stone disease, and minimally invasive surgery.
Dr. Lorentz has been recognized for excellence in both academics and patient care. He was awarded the William Hollis Cooner Award for exemplary compassion and patient care as well as the Montague Boyd research award from the Southeastern Section of the American Urological Association. He's been recognized by his peers with the Hidden Gem award, calling him "a consummate physician leader who is esteemed by his team, his colleagues and his patients alike."
Dr. Lorentz is an experienced robotic surgeon and the first urologist in Atlanta to perform single-port robotic surgery using the advanced Da Vinci SP platform. This allows for less-invasive approaches to common urological surgeries, including extraperitoneal prostate and kidney surgery. He also offers focal therapy for prostate cancer, having performed the first High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) prostate ablation treatments at Emory. He strives to bring the most current treatments to his patients for improving quality of life, such as penile prosthesis and benign prostate treatments like Aquablation and UroLift. He is involved in mentoring medical students and residents. His research has earned numerous awards; he has co-authored over 35 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles and abstracts, which have been presented locally, nationally, and internationally. As Medical Director of The Emory Clinic Urology at Emory University Hospital Midtown, Associate Chair for General & Community Urology Clinical Operations, and Medical Director for Emory Healthcare Patient Access, Dr. Lorentz is working to expand access to urologic care in Atlanta and the surrounding communities.

AWESOMENESS

This was a textbook appointment. Both the doctor and the assistant were thorough in explaining what to expect through the procedure. Doctor Lorentz was great at explaining what he was going to do, what he was doing along the way and what he found through the procedure. He was excellent at clearly explaining what he found, listening, answering my questions and articulating my options moving forward. Our discussion was effective and efficient and I never felt like I was cut short or he was in a rush.

I'm struggling with this one. I think objectively I received good care. However, my concerns are around communication. The procedure was painful so I asked him to stop and he said we could quit but it felt like he wanted to get it done because "it would only last a couple minutes." After it was over, he said "everything is fine" but I had to probe as to what potentially caused the issue that brought me to have to procedure. And then I had to probe as to what to look out for in the future and when to be concerned. Lastly there was no mention as to aftercare and what to look at for that might indicate an issue with the procedure (e.g., expect blood, it might be painful for a few days, feel free to take aspirin). Basically it felt like he would have ended with "everything looks good."

Very good doctor

The physician assistant was very thorough and appeared very concerned about my condition. He mentioned that a tumor on the kidneys is usually 80% cancerous. The doctor on the other hand did not approach my medical issue with the concern I was expecting. When there is a tumor spotted on your kidneys, I assumed a doctor would find that concerning. Dr. Lorentz did not offer any proposed medical treatment for the tumor and didn't discuss any further investigation of the tumor. Instead, he suggested I return to my primary care physician for further evaluation or to go to the ER. He further suggested I return to him in a month while this tumor is growing on my kidney. The only acceptable treatment Dr. Lorentz provided was to order blood work on my adrenal gland for the tumor growing there, and refer me to a gastroenterologist oncologist for the tumor growing on my pancreatist. There was no physical examination even though I informed Dr. Lorentz that I was experiencing pain. Further, since my urine sample showed no immediate concern, he was content sending me away with a follow-up in a month's time.
