About Dr. Park
Catherine Park, MD, is an internal medicine physician at Emory Clinic at Midtown with clinical interets that include preventive care, primary care and adult health. “Preventive care is a huge part of primary care,” says Dr. Park. “We will talk about diet, exercise habits, stress management. Even sleep is a factor in the patient’s health. It’s OK for the patient to discuss any concerns without reservation. We should have open communication between us.”
The team approach
Dr. Park always includes the patient in decision-making about their medical care, she says. “Also, it’s important for me to coordinate patient care with specialists to make sure the medical care is seamless. I act as the patient’s advocate, with the emphasis that we are a team. Both the patient and I will work together to tackle any medical issues.”
Helping Patients Understand
Explaining test results and diagnosis -- and other aspects of medical care -- are an important part of her job, Dr. Park says. “This helps patients feel more comfortable about their medical care. Just by understanding the details better, they will understand their care better.”
If the patient has seen a specialist, “I will explain what the tests mean, what the numbers mean, in a very straightforward, simple fashion so patients can understand,” she says. “A lot is about helping patients process the information.”
