During the appointment with Dr. Rimando, where we were given the news that my dad would not be moving forward with a bone marrow transplant, were very disappointed with how the conversation was handled. Delivering news of this gravity over Zoom, rather than in person felt inappropriate and lacking in compassion. During the visit when my parents shared that both the Emory pulmonologist and Emory cardiologist felt he was in good shape for the procedure (not to mention my dad wrote his bike 20 miles just a couple days ago) doctor Armando responded "well they don't make the decision I do" in a callous tone. This came across as dismissive rather than empathetic, and it added unnecessary distress In an already very difficult situation. We know these are complex decisions and do not take lightly the expertise involved but we expected more sincerity, compassion and sensitivity. How this life altering news was communicated we felt the bedside manner fell short of Emory standard of care and up until this point have been very happy with the Winship Team. I also want to share that I'm a healthcare provider who works with catastrophically injured patients so I have a deep understanding of the importance of UNDER promising and OVER delivering, especially when it comes to services available and expected outcomes. In my dads case the BMT was scheduled, a donor match was secured and everything was set to move forward. Then literally just days before he was to begin Dr Armando abruptly said "oh the pulmonary functions are bad so we're not going to do it." from my perspective It seems that all the necessary assessments should have been fully completed and reviewed before OVER promising and scheduling a patient for such a major procedure. The Way this unfolded Set expectations and then effectively took away his only potential option for a cure at the last minute, which was devastating for him and our family. Talk about OVER promise and UNDER deliver - you never want to do that in healthcare.

Dr Rimando has been great throughout our BMT process. He is very thorough, but never rushed making sure any questions we may have are thoroughly discussed. I was a patient outside the normal standards/ protocol but he looked at our total picture and has stood by us bringing us through it. We are blessed I have a future because of him
