About

Dr. Kerry-Ann Mitchell is a distinguished surgeon-scientist specializing in Neuroplastic Surgery, with expertise in complex scalp and skull deformities resulting from neurosurgical procedures, trauma, cancer, and neurological disorders such as epilepsy. She joined Emory University as a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Neurosurgery. In her clinical role, Dr. Mitchell will serve as Director of the Neuroplastic Surgery Program, leading a multidisciplinary team to advance the treatment of patients with intricate cranial deformities. She will also oversee Basic and Translational Research in the Division as Principal Investigator of the Neuroplastic Surgery Research Laboratory, focusing on nanotransfection-based techniques to enhance calvarial bone healing
following traumatic brain injury and strokes.

Dr. Mitchell’s academic journey began in Jamaica, where she was born and raised. She immigrated to the United States at the age of 17 to attend Benedict College in South Carolina, where she earned a BS in Biology, graduating Summa Cum Laude. She continued her studies at the University of Utah, earning a PhD in Neuroscience with a dissertation on the development of a novel preclinical model of infection-induced epilepsy. Dr. Mitchell then completed her MD at Stanford University School of Medicine, followed by residency in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Southern California.

Her academic and surgical training culminated in a prestigious fellowship in Neuroplastic & Reconstructive Surgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she became the first U.S.-trained plastic surgeon and the first female to complete this fellowship. She then joined the faculty at Ohio State University, where she led the establishment of the first Multidisciplinary Neuroplastic Surgery Program in the Midwest.

Dr. Mitchell's work is supported by funding from the National Institutes of Health, the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, and The Plastic Surgery Foundation. She is excited to bring her expertise to Emory University, where she aims to advance the field of neuroplastic surgery and expand its impact on patient care and research.
