About Dr. Bowen
Melody Bowen, MD, received her medical degree from Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon, GA, and completed an Internal Medicine/Pediatrics internship and residency at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA.
Dr. Bowen is dedicated to preventive medicine and working with adults of all ages to improve their health. “I really like the idea of stopping disease before it starts, and adding years of value to patients’ lives,” she says. “Every patient has their own unique background, lifestyle and health problems, and they each need something different from their provider, from the healthcare system.”
Listening and Building Trust
Dr. Bowen first lays a foundation of trust when meeting new patients. “The foundation of any patient interaction should be trust, being open and listening to what’s important to that patient,” says Dr. Bowen. “Together, we will decide what to do moving forward. I want my patients to guide the discussion, so I can figure out what’s most important to them.”
Empowering and Educating Patients
She believes in helping her patients become their own best advocates in the healthcare system. “I want to excite them about good health, to know it’s attainable, and help them on the journey to a best all-around life,” she says. “I want to be the cheerleader in the background, ‘we can do this if you make these changes.’ My goal is to make them excited about good health, believe it is attainable, and do whatever I can to get them there.”
When patients have chronic, complex medical conditions, she believes it is the physician’s responsibility to explain it all very clearly to the patient, says Dr. Bowen. “It’s my job to make sure my patients understand their condition and the logical steps we are taking to treat their conditions.”
Family Members are Welcome
Dr. Bowen wants patients to know, “they can trust me, I’m reliable, I want to be their advocate, or their liaison with medical specialists.”
She encourages family members to come along to appointments. This is especially helpful with elderly patients, who may not fully understand their condition or their treatment. “Achieving good health is not always easy, it can be very challenging, but a good healthcare provider working with the family can really take the burden off an elderly patient.”
