Michael A. Burke, MD, is an assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiology at Emory University. Dr. Burke specializes in congestive heart failure, heart transplantation, mechanical circulatory support and cardiac critical care. He completed medical school at Jefferson Medical College, followed by internal medicine and general cardiovascular diseases training at Northwestern University. While at Northwestern, he was a scholar in the Physician Scientist Training Program, studying pathophysiologic mechanisms underlying heart failure. Subsequently, he completed a fellowship in advanced heart failure and transplantation medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Upon completion of his clinical training, Dr. Burke joined the Seidman Lab in the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School as a post-doctoral research fellow, where he studied the molecular signaling networks that underlie the development of heart failure. During this time, he was also on staff as a heart failure physician at the West Roxbury VA Medical Center.
Dr. Burke’s research focuses on the molecular and genetic basis of cardiomyopathies and heart failure. In particular, he is actively engaged in research projects studying the epigenetic control of pathologic gene activation, the control of metabolic gene expression and the regulatory role played by cardiac fibroblasts and pro-fibrotic signaling in the progression to heart failure. Dr. Burke joined the faculty at Emory in 2016.
