Michael Heit, MD, is a board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology as a subspecialty consultant in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. He completed his fellowship training at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago with Linda Brubaker, MD, MS, an internationally recognized expert in the field. Dr. Heit then headed the Division of Urogynecology and established the accredited fellowship program in Urogynecology (now Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery) at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, from 1994-2004. From 2004 until 2013, he was the owner of Urogynecology Specialists PLLC, then Louisville Urogynecology, PLLC, both Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery private practices in Louisville, KY at Norton Suburban Hospital.
Since March 2013, Dr. Heit joined his long time friend and colleague, Douglass Hale MD, in private practice at Urogynecology Associates PSC and he also served as Fellowship Director of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Indiana University School of Medicine. Since January 2018, he has practiced urogynecology as a member of Indiana University Health Physicians Group.
Beginning August 1, 2022, Dr. Heit joined the Emory School of Medicine as an Associate Professor in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics and serve as the Division Director of Gynecologic Specialties and his surgical practice is focused on minimally invasive gynecologic surgery to treat disorders such as urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, abnormal uterine bleeding, endometriosis, and fibroid uterus.
Dr. Heit's primary interest and personal expertise is in professional development having successfully mentored first Obstetrics and Gynecology residents, and second Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS) fellows at two institutions in the scientific method and publication of peer reviewed research. In addition, he joined the faculty at Emory University School of Medicine to provide mentorship and surgical education to young and mid-career faculty, medical students, residents, and fellows interested in a career in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery and Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery.
Dr. Heit developed an interest in furthering his expertise in the scientific method through formal educational training early in my academic medicine career. He then enrolled in the University of Louisville's Master of Science in Public Health followed by the PhD in Epidemiology and Clinical Research programs while managing a busy clinical division, to accomplish this personal goal. The primary objective of this formalized education was to gain the expertise to compete effectively for extramural funding from the NIH and expand my leadership role in mentored investigator initiated clinical research for Ob/Gyn residents and FPMRS fellows interested in a career in academic medicine.
In his personal time, Dr. Heit enjoys spending time with his wife and grandson. He enjoys traveling, being outdoors, and exercising at the gym. Originally from New York, Dr. Heit is a fan of his native area sports teams: the New York Mets, the New York Giants, the New York Knickerbockers and the New York Rangers. He is also a fan of the Liverpool Football Club.
